The Limnologist / Water Quality Specialist is responsible for the development and/or implementation of programs, policy, standards and objectives to support the protection of aquatic ecosystems and manage cumulative effects of human activities in the Upper Athabasca Region. Under the direction of the Resource Manager, Upper Athabasca Region, the Limnologist / Water Quality Specialist provides technical expertise to all levels of government, partners, stakeholders, and the general public, with respect to the quality of Alberta’s surface water resources. You will develop, design and maintain oversight of the regional management programs, as well provide specialist services in aquatic ecosystem assessment, water quality analysis and watershed management.
The successful candidate will ensure that water quality issues are considered in key water planning strategies and that work is being conducted towards the achievement of goals outlined within provincial strategies such as Water for Life. The Limnologist / Water Quality Specialist also provides technical expertise and professional advice in support of regulatory processes and ongoing performance assessment of industrial and municipal facilities governed under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement act and Water Act.
Salary: $2,975.50 to $3,850.62 bi-weekly ($77,660 to $100,501 annually). Closing Date: June 22, 2018. Job ID #1049295
At minimum, this role requires:
- University graduation in Natural Science or Aquatic Resource Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 6 years of related experience in areas of aquatic science, limnology, aquatic ecosystems and/or ecology, and watershed conservation/management
- Equivalencies will be considered and candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
Assets to the role include:
- A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Additional directly related experience.
- A working knowledge of statistical analysis, modelling and related software, as well as, provincial legislation, regulations and policy surrounding water quality.
- Demonstrated alignment with the competencies listed below.
- Advanced technical knowledge of ambient water quality issues and environmental management planning.
