PhD in the Ecology & Chemistry of Cyanobacterial Toxins

Description: We seek a doctoral student to study the chemistry and ecology of microcystins in freshwater lakes. Possible areas of research include: development of methods for quantifying microcystins in biological tissues, toxic effects of microcystins on aquatic biota, and analysis of regional and global microcystin data sets. This position will be based in the School of Environmental Studies at Queen’s University (http://www.queensu.ca/ensc/). The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr. Xavier Ortiz and Dr. Diane Orihel. Start date: September 2018.

Essential requirement: M.Sc. in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field (completed or in-progress).

Preferred assets: in-depth knowledge of aquatic chemistry, ecology, and/or ecotoxicology; experience collecting and/or analysing environmental samples; experience in the design and execution of field and/or lab studies; demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively; and strong quantitative and communication skills.
