Coupling zooplankton diel vertical migrations and nythtemeral activity
in brook charr : a bioenergetic approach

Aim of the project: The objective of this project is to understand the
strength of the relationship between both vertical and horizontal diel
migrations of zooplankton (DVM and DHM, respectively) and the 3-
dimensional movements of its predators in lakes. We will couple in situ
sampling of zooplankton in both the vertical and horizontal axis with
3-D high-resolution data on brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) tagged
with acoustic transponders. Automatic data-logging will allow to follow
individual fish at high temporal resolution in order to get an accurate
mapping of the predation risk for zooplankton. The ultimate goal  is to
couple this information with the resources distribution (phytoplankton
and temperature) in order to clarify the mechanisms behind zooplankton

Qualifications: We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with
excellent skills for both field work and statistical analysis, in
addition to a strong background in bioenergetics. Students eligible to
NSERC or  FQRNT grants will be prioritized. The selected candidate will
conduct intensive field sampling, taxonomic analyses on zooplankton
and  analyses of complex data bases. He/she will then participate to
the conception of the sampling desing, including sampling and in situ
incubations of zooplankton (Laurentides lakes) on 24h cycles. Working
language could be either French or English. The position will provide
ample opportunities for interaction with other members of the Research
Centre for Watershed – Aquatic Ecosystem Interactions which currently
includes 15 faculty members in the fields of Aquatic Ecology and
Physical Geography, as well as 40 MSc/Ph.D. students and postdoctoral

The annual stipend is $21,000 CAN for three years and the starting is
either June or September 2017. Candidates should send a CV together
