The Canadian Limnology Community Mourns the Death of David Schindler

We are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. David Schindler who passed away on March 4th, 2021 at the age of 80. For decades David was a trailblazer and leading force behind the protection and conservation of aquatic environments in Canada and around the World. He has received numerous awards for his outstanding science, which often resulted in paradigm shifts and improved legislation and policies. To no surprise in 1984 he was the inaugural winner of the SCL Frank Rigler Award. This award is the highest honour given by the Society of Canadian Limnologists to recognize major achievements in the field of limnology by Canadians or those working in Canada. We would argue that David would have deserved this award several times over for his many major achievements over the following 37 years of his career.

While David will be missed dearly, his positive influence on society and the scientific community will certainly live on in the work of his countless students, colleagues and friends.

Sincerely,
SCL Board of Directors
